Being one of the main centers and a crucial spot in the history of the freedom struggle of India, Lucknow houses the remnants of the 1857 revolt, which led to the fight for independence, in a museum known as the 1857 Memorial Museum. A visit to the museum allows you to separate facts from fiction, as you find yourself transported to the time when freedom was fought for.
The museum has preserved the artifacts of the struggle for freedom and the 1857 revolt and is a must for both historians and layman alike.
Transporting you to the times gone by, the museum houses documents, photographs, lithographs, maps, portraits and paintings which depict the freedom struggle. Along with these, you will also come across cannons, guns, weapons used during the 1857 revolt, shields and medals from that era. Artifacts like fragments of pottery, wine bottles, and terracotta tiles amongst others were unearthed during recent excavations and are displayed in the new wing-- which is in the basement of the museum.
