Steep into the tranquil and mystical ambience of these ancient walls, tucked away in a quiet village--and bring home some wonderful digital captures! Located two hours away from the bustling city of Jaipur is Abhaneri—a must visit for photographers and tourists looking towards indulging their senses in some mind blowing architectural wonders. This small venue is home to a set of marvelous step wells, built by Samrat Mihir Bhoj, way back in the 8th Century.
It is interesting to note that the Abhaneri Step Well was constructed to give easy access to the wealthy—to climb down the stairs and take a luxuriant bath in cool waters; even in a desert like Rajasthan. The waters in the bath were then used for providing relief to the poor. Unfazed by weather conditions and time, these steps have survived the tests of time—for more than 10 centuries. The unique stairway was an amazing way of harvesting waters in the dry and arid lands of the region. Here, you will also see a cluster of steps—with the Chand Baori being the most prominent among the lot and exposing you to dizzying heights.
Located in close vicinity to the wells is the ancient temple of Harshat Mata. Most portions of this beautiful temple are now in ruins but provide a deep insight into the architectural beauty and sculpted opulence of the place. Abhaneri is also popular for its variety of folk dances: Ghoomar, Kalbelia, Bawai and more.
