Advice on Carry on Packing with SLR camera equipment

I`ve generally traveled light on planes and trains (but not cars...something about those things that make me want to fill up the seemingly infinite luggage space :-). However, I am the new proud owner of a Canon XSi DSLR camera. My first SLR camera ever! While I am still learning how to use it I envision many trips in the future with destinations selected specifically for the photographic opportunities. But for those of you who are experienced photographers and travelers, how is it possible to pack light with SLRs and all the accessories they require? My model is relatively small, but when you factor in extra lenses a monopod or tripod, extra batteries, memory cards, etc. all in a heavily padded case, the camera case is almos as big is my main carry-on! Do you take your laptop, too? is that a separate case or do you manage everything together? For those of you who are female, do you also have a separate purse - meaning 3 carry- on bags? purse, camera case (with or without a laptop), and your actual carry-on luggage?
