Among many tourist attractions of Pune, the Aga Khan Palace is one of the most famous ones. The palace has a rich history. It was built by Sultan Muhammad Shah Aga Khan III in 1892 in Pune. Aga Khan III was the 48th Imam (the Shia doctrine of spiritual, religious and political leadership of the Ummah) of the Nizari Ismaili community who had raised charity to build the palace.

The palace is closely related to freedom movements of India as after the rein of British in India, the palace was used as a prison where Mahatma Gandhi with his wife and secretary were jailed due to the launch of Quit India Movement. In 2003, the palace was declared as a historical monument by Indian archaeologists.
