An important Municipal Committee and archeological site located in the district of Jammu, Akhnoor lures with its stunning views of the foothills of the Himalayas. It is situated at an easy driving distance of 28 km from the city of Jammu and is picturesquely poised on the scenic banks of River Chenab. The Tehsil of Akhnoor is segregated into two Revenue Blocks – Khour and Akhnoor. This area is also divisible into three major education zones—Khour, Akhnoor and Chowki Choura. It is believed that Akhnoor is the ancient city of Virat Nagar, which acquires mention in the Mahabarata.
Boasting of the distinction of being one of the important historical sites of the state of Jammu and Kashmir, it contains valuable remnants of the Manda and Harappan Civilizations. Evidences offered by the Archaeological Survey of India prove that Akhnoor was among the last bastions of the Harrappan Civilization—especially in the northern precincts of the country.
