Home to the Nehru family for over five generations, Anand Bhavan in Allahabadis synonymous with the fight for the freedom of India from the British rule. It was in this house that the freedom fighters met and planned their strategies to overthrow the British. It was here that Jawaharlal Nehru and Mahatama Gandhi met with other leaders of the Congress party during the pre independence days. This is also the house which witnessed the birth and then the wedding of Indira Gandhi, India’s first and so far only lady Prime Minister.
The house itself is a two storied building set amidst a sprawling garden and is now a museum displaying the memorabilia of the days past. A walk through the house takes you past the bedroom of Jawaharlal Nehru, independent Indian’s first Prime Minister, his study displaying his personal belongings along with the room that Mahatama Gandhi used to occupy on his visits here. There is also a picture gallery covering the life and times of Nehru which is located in the outhouse adjoining the main building. Visitors can also enjoy the sound and light show that is staged daily at four different times.
