India’s first tiger census was conducted in 1932 here in Betla National Park and it still remains an important national park. This is located around 140 kms away from Ranchi in the west direction and is among the best places in India to see wild elephants and tigers. Tigers have gone rare over the period of time yet there is a good chance to spot a few here. The entire Sanctuary is 1026 sq kms in size out of which 232 sq km area has been declared as Betla National Park in 1989. There are 37 tigers, 62 leopards, 210 elephants and 249 bison in the national park as per the official records. There are good opportunities to observe the wildlife through the observation towers that are especially made for this purpose.
There are almost 200 villages in the nearby area where eight tribes are living. This whole area has a history to tell. It was the seat of power in Chero dynastu in 16th century. There are two forts that were built during that time. The best time to visit the national park is from October to April. In the monsoon season there is not much to see and it usually remains closed. However May remains the best season to spot the tigers but you will have to bear a lot of heat for that. You can enjoy various types of safaris here ranging from jeep safari to even elephant safari. There is also a Van Vihar complex that is run by the tourist department of the state government. Therefore you will not only experience the wild life, the flora and fauna, but also get a chance to buy certain things as a tourist to take some memories from this place.
If you want to stay inside the national park, you can easily do that and the accommodation charges are not that high. The accommodations are available all year long. Jharkhand tourism department has also opened a tourist house here that could be used as a place to stay and is very cheap too. If you want to stay far from here, then the nearest town is Daltonganj which is 25 kms away. You can either take a bus to the town or hire a taxi to reach there. Daltonganj is also connected to Ranchi via road and it is almost five-six hours of drive. It is advisable to go for the tourist agencies while traveling here as the security remains a concern in these isolated locations. Also you need to have a talk with the tourist department and understand the security issues completely before traveling anywhere around. The safety precautions are mandatory and should not be missed.
