This was founded in the year 1883 and is one of the biggest NGO’s in India which are involved in preservation of the environment and researching biodiversity. It is popularly referred to by is initials BNHS and the head building is located on Shaheed Bhagat Singh road at Hornbill house. This organization is extensively involved in organizing activities for nature conservation, exploring natural history. Some famous ornithologists in India such as S. Dillon Ripley have been associated with this organization in the past. The museum of the Organization has a vast collection of rare specimens of vertebrates, insects, butterflies and beetles.
This organization has more than 30 affiliate member countries and it even has its own journal called the The Journal of the Bombay Natural History Society. There is also a publication turned out on a quarterly basis called the Hornbill. Till date it has received a large number of awards for its efforts in environmental conservation.
