Located in the centre of Kottayam, Cheriyapally, which literally means small church in Malayalam, is an exquisite mix of Hindu and Portuguese architecture. It is popularly known as the St. Mary’s Church by the locals. One of the oldest churches, it is believed to have been built by the Portuguese in 1579. The interiors of the church are adorned by murals painted with vegetable dyes. These depict scenes from the Bible and seem to come alive with their craftsmanship. Granite pillars and suspended lamps from the roof create a visual treat for the eyes. A visit to this church must be on the itinerary of your visit to Kottayam.
