Chilika Lake is Asia’s largest brackish lagoon which is located in Puri District of Orissa. The lake is huge and spans a vast area of approximately 1100 sq kms in its peak time during the monsoons. In the month of April or May it covers area of 1100 sq km. The lake is separated from the Bay of Bengal by a 60 km long trail of sand called as Rajhansa. There are huge numbers of birds that get migrated here during the season.
There are around million plus birds that migrate here every season which include herons, cranes, geese, flamingos etc. The best season for bird watching is from November to January when the winters have arrived and so the birds. The birds from as far as Siberia and Iran come here during that time. It is supposedly the largest congregation of the aquatic birds in Indian subcontinent.
There is a bird sanctuary in Nalabana Island where most of the birds accumulate in a small region. There are quite a number of attractions in the nearby places. You will also get to see the dolphins which are not so common in India. The best time to sight dolphins are when the commercial boats seize operations there,the dolphins just zoom out and immediately move in so just get a glimpse of them.The place is quite refreshing and holds special beauty.
