Constantia House is famed as one of most visited tourist destinations inLucknow. Known worldwide for its grand architectural style, Constantia House forms an important part of the La Martiniere College in Lucknow. The erecetion of this colossal monument began in the year 1785, under the directions and orders of Major-General Claude Martin. He was a Frenchman desirous of making this magnificent structure his residential address in India. Unfortunately, he passed away in the year 1800—just two years prior to Constantia House reaching its completion.
This monument is believed to have been named after the principle in Martin's life--'Labore et Constantia', and came to be known as ‘Constantia House’. His will had announced his desire to build three large educational institutions in three different locations in the country –thus leading to the formation of a college in Lucknow and Constantia becoming a part of the same.
The highlights of this majestic building include a spire in its centre and boasts of grand steps leading to its main entrance. The stone and sand-colored Constantia House reminds all visitors of the grandeur and opulence of the eras gone by and steeps them in its old world charm. Here, you will come across another interesting structure—called the Laat. This is a tall cupola that reaches out to the blue sky and lies in close vicinity to the La Martiniere Boy's College—that is located in the central parts of Constantia House.
