The Crocodile Bank is a unique wildlife park in Chennai, which was originally set up by Romulus Whitaker, a conservationist in the year 1976 for saving the scarce Indian crocodile species, namely Marsh (mugger) crocodile, gharial and salt-water crocodile. If you are fond of seeing reptiles like crocodiles basking in the sun and snakes slithering through the trees then you should visit this place. There is a snake house too here, along with a stall which sells honey, a tribal medicine, which serves as an antidote against snakebites. This is the biggest crocodile sanctuary in India. You can see more than 2500 animals which include 10 varieties of turtles and 14 different species of crocodiles. It would be interesting to know that more than 5000 crocodiles have been bred in this bank. The bank has adopted some very new methods of research and conservation of these reptiles.
This bank is quite unique in its own way, and the first of its kind in the whole of Asia. This is an ideal place not only for crocodiles but also for water birds like Olive Ridley Sea turtles and water birds.
The Green Anacondas from South America are the heaviest snakes on Earth, appeared here on the 19th January,2013. Several camps and field trips are conducted for students, teachers and youth.
A Crocshop which sells all kinds of books and materials on the bank's residents, crocodiles and turtles and best of all, crocodile, fish and snake stuff toys and hand puppets, is located within the premises of the Crocodile bank.
