The Dadra and Nagar Haveli is an Indian Union Territory and is located in its western region. The Union territory is spread in an area of 491 square kilometers and was merged in India as a Union Territory in the year 1961. The main languages spoken widely in the state are Gujarati, Marathi and Hindi. Not many people are aware that the Marathas had signed a treaty with the Portuguese in the year 1779. This treaty was signed to keep the British and the Mughals out of the territory of Dadra and Nagar Haveli. The main river which flows through the territory of this union territory is the River Daman Ganga.
The residents of the Dadra and Nagar Haveli attained freedom from the Portuguese rule with the support of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh United Front of Goans, the Azad Gomantak Dal and the National Movement Liberation Organization in the year 1954.
