Rani Roshmani a great philanthropist of 19th century Kolkotta, she was planning a trip to Benares and just a day before the Journey she had vision of great mother Goddess in her dream who told her that there is no need to visit Benares but just install her statue there and pray. Immediately next day Rani obeyed this command and thus the wonderful temple came into existence by the year. This temple was built in period from 1847-1855.
The spirituality of this temple increased manifold when The Great ascetic of 19th century, Swami Ramakrishna Parmahansa became the head priest. This temple became famous for his spiritual discourses and also became the birthplace for great philosophical interactions between him and his most famed discipline Swami Vivekananda.
Built on the banks of River Hooghly this temple welcomes you with its spirituality and. warmth What you can see a great example of typical ‘ Nav Ratna ‘ style Bengal Architecture. It is three storied south facing temple and has 9 spires distributed on upper two floors and stands on high platform with flight of stairs. As you enter the Garba griha( sanctum sanctorum) you can see the divine idol of Goddess Kali known as Bhavtarini standing on the chest of lying Shiva placed on thousand petaled lotus made of silver. Further in the temple complex you can see a row of twelve identical Shiva temples. To the North east of the Temple Complex is the Vishnu Temple or the Radha Kanta’s Temple.
