Around 4 kms west of Kumbakonam, you will find the village of Dharasuram which is a beautiful place to visit. There is an Airatesvara temple which was constructed by Raja Raja II in the year of 1146 to 1163. The temple will give you a clear idea about how developed the architecture of 12th century was. The temple complex is lovely and the front part contains the columns with miniature sculptures. Around the time of 14th century, the large statues of the temple were replaced with those made of bricks and concrete and that resemble the ones at the Thanjavur Temple. Many of them were removed to the art gallery in Raja’s palace but they have been returned to Dharasuram. There are remarkable sculptures that will tell you the stories from various parts of the history. If you go to the main shrine you will find a number of lingams standing in a row and the sunlight makes them illuminate throughout the day.
