In the olden days Bareilly contained within its vicinity an ancient city by the name of Ahicchattra which was supposed to be one of the principal cities of an ancient empire. Since that time there were four temples in the city by the name of TrivatiNath, AlakhaNath, Dhopeshwarnath and Madhinath. The presence of these ancient temples till today has also given Bareilly its other name that is NathNagri or the city of temples.
The Dhopeshwarnath temple was built dedicated to Lord Dhopeshwarnath and was considered to be the place where Dhristadyumana and Draupadi were born back in the age of Mahabharata. This temple is located in the Sadar bazar cantonment area. It would be a good idea to pay a visit to this prominent temple if you are visiting the city of Bareilly.
This temple can be easily reached and the interesting thing about visiting this temple is that the visitors coming here must find their way through a tunnel that contains water that reaches the waist level. The tunnel or guffa gives way to the main temple area where the statue of the lord is placed. Also the temple has a lovely water pool around it and visitors would surely like to have a dip in the cool water. So in addition to being a nice religious experience it would also be an interesting one.
