Discounted train tickets in Spain
Posted on Jun 27, 2013 by
Just wanted to tell you that the Spanish rail site offers discounts and e-tickets. We got a 60 percent discount for a high-speed train from Barcelona to Madrid - web fares. These are not changeable but are partially refundable. They also have Estrella (star) prices - 40 per cent discount. Estrella fares are exchangeable with a service fee of 15 per cent for a same day train and 20 percent for a train on another day. Not all journeys have discounts available, though. And we decided to go 1st class since it is over a meal time and food is included in first class.
RENFE has an English interface but you can`t immediately choose English or you get just schedules, not booking.
We used the detailed instructions on the site The Man In Seat 61. Go to the section How to use the Spanish Railways website
To register with the site, we had to put in our passport number. For postal code, we used 12345. If you register, you can login again to reprint your ticket or check details.
We had to do two things: allow an exception for the certificate for the website with our browser (we were using Firefox, Mac OS10) - you may not have to do this with Internet Explorer; we also had to do a secure transaction with our Mastercard. Pretty normal!
We will print off the tickets before we go to Spain. That`s all we have to do, evidently. The PDF e-ticket that was generated shows our seat numbers.
