Renowned for its elephant camp, the forest reserve of Dubare lies on the banks of river Kaveri. This popular tourist destination is frequented by people from all walks of life and lies in the district of Kodagu. The region serves as an important area for the elephants managed by the Karnataka Forest Department. The elephants used during the Mysore Dussehra procession are usually trained at the Dubare elephant camp.
In contemporary times, after a cessation in the volumes of logging operations, the elephants in the region have been retired to a great extent and are use only for offering rides to interested tourists. The other places worth seeing in the area along with the elephant camp is Nisargadhamaand Veerabhoomi. Here, you will find many opportunities for elephant rides, fishing, trekking and river rafting. Though many of these activities are hosted by the owners of private jungle lodges and resorts, you may also opt for some interesting trekking trails under the management of the Forest Department.
