The amazing city of Fatehpur Sikri was once the capital of Mughal Empire between 1571 and 1585 during the rule of Emperor Akbar. This ghost city is located at a distance of 40 kms from Agra and therefore is a wonderful place to visit if you are visiting Taj Mahal. There is a lot of historical context behind Fatehpur Sikri.
Fatehpur Sikri was made the capital of Akbar’s empire after a Sufi saint Shaikh Salim Chisti rightly predicted the birth of an heir to the Mughal Throne. Akbar was so happy that he built the capital here even when there were water shortage and various other problems. After the death of Akbar, the city was abandoned and couldn’t be preserved. However one can still find the beautiful architectural buildings and the mosque there. The palaces are well preserved and they are the reminders of brilliant Mughal styles of architecture. The place has been declared as World Heritage Site and people who visit Taj Mahal also visit this place as it is not that far from Agra. The place looks absolutely beyautiful in the sunset and the settings appeal to the eyes. The place will remind you of Mughal era as it preserves the memories of that time.
