The Ganesh Pol Gateway is a majestic and ornately decorated gateway that stands stoic in time –with the head of the “Elephant God” Ganesha, adorning its pinnacle. The Ganesh Gate, as Ganesh Pol is popularly called, acts as a gateway to the royal residences and palaces of the maharajas.
Lord Ganesha is believed to remove all the obstacles from the path of his devotees and is much referred by the followers of Hinduism. This mammoth gate leads into the well manicured greens and lawns of the Charbagh—a Mughal-style garden. Renowned for its unique conglomeration of Mughal and Rajput styles of architecture –the archways of this gate are exquisitely ornamented and boast of a fine network of jaalis or fine latticework.
The gateway is pinnacled by a stunning shelter ( chattri) and two exquisite domes located on both sides of the canopy. Tourists from domestic and international quarters flock to this gateway to witness its delicate mosaics and frescos-- that are set between finely carved screens of lattice. As the legend goes, the ladies of the royal family would watch the proceedings of the court and ceremonial performances held in the Diwan-e-aam courtyard through the gaps in these screens –a ‘must-see’ indeed!
