Located in Uttar Pradesh, Gorakhpur is adjacent to the Nepal border. The administrative headquarter of the district; Gorakhpur has high religious importance for the Buddhists and Muslims. Amongst one of the ancient cities of the country, Gorakhpur derives its name from Saint Goraknath, who lived here. A temple dedicated to the saint stands on the spot where he was supposed to have practiced Yoga. Also located in Goraknath is a 18th century Imambara that is revered by the Muslim community. Goraknath is famous as a place for its wood carving industry and its terracotta art industry. It is also home to the well known Gita Press, famous for its publishing of texts sacred to the Hindus.
