The town has got its name from the Jat clan that is found in Punjab. The economy is backed by agriculture. A small town Goraya is mainly an industrial town and houses various small scale industries that back its economy well.
One of the main attractions that leave visitors spell bound is Gurudwara Sang Babaji. The Gurdwara is located in a small village called Sang Dhesian which lays 3 Kms west to Goraya. As soon as a visitor marks way into the village, the Gurudwara can be spotted at the entrance. The most astonishing factor is that for its construction 25 ounces of gold were used. A magnificently beautiful art gallery where one can find magnificent woodwork on sandalwood resides inside the Gurdwara. For devotees there is a big dining hall where hundreds of people can have Langar. Other attractions are the Rishi Kutiya, Ram Mandir, Baba Balaknath Temple and Temple Pir Baba.
