Founded in 1874 by Sir F S Growse, the Government Museum in Mathura is considered as one of the best museums in the country. Also known as the Archeological Museum, it houses a stunning display of transcripts, paintings, coins and other artifacts excavated from archeological digs around this area. A large majority of these artifacts are dated between the 3rd century and the 12th century and pertain to the Gupta and Kushan dynasty. The museum also has on display dazzling sculptures from the Mathura School of Art. A walk around the museum exposes you to terracotta and bronze sculptures, ornaments and other artifacts which showcase the brilliance and the sophistication of those times. The museum must definitely be on your itinerary when you visit Mathura.
