Located in the western precincts of the beautiful Dal Lake is the popular Harbat Parbat Hill. This majestic geographical formation overlooks the thriving city of Srinagar and is home to the Hari Parbat Fort. Boasting of high historic significance, this ancient fort dates back to the times of the Mughals and is assumed to have been constructed under the orders of Atta Mohammad Khan, an Afghan Governor. Hari Parbat Fort was built in the 18th century and is dominated by long stretches of walls that go all around the hill. These walls were constructed during the reign of Emperor Akbar, the Great Mughal ruler, in the year 1590. An attractive monument of Srinagar, this interesting place for tourists and an important historical monument, is maintained and managed by the State Archaeological Department—which also issues the passes and required entry permissions for visiting the various bounties of this Fort. Sharika Devi Temple and Lalmandi Square are some of the other important places of interest located nearby.
