Hawaii - Big Island (also Maui questions)

Thanks for the suggestion. Thanks! Based on this and other suggestions I have revised the trip - we land Friday morning and are driving right to VNP. Staying at one of the properties run by the Inn at Volcano. They have a complementary tea daily which will be nice for Mom while we hike some more! We will spend Friday day and night in the park and as much time as we want on Saturday. Then we are driving north through Hilo to Akaka Falls and continuing to Kohala (supposedly nicer than Kona?). I`m told this drive with stops is approx 3 hours? So I`m assuming that Sat morning in VNP and the drive will be most of the day Saturday.
Right now I have a reservation at the Marriott Waikoloa for Sat and Sun. I was able to get a discounted room one night ($239) but the other is $299 and both are before the resort fee. Not sure if this is worth it since we are not big resort people or not but place sounds nice and good location and I guess I got an ok rate on the one night (?). Other lodging/location suggestions welcome! I`m thinking of doing the Mauna Kea trip on Sunday (with the more expensive but highly recommended company) so will be Sunday morning at the beach and then the afternoon/evening at Mauna Kea. Another plus is that this way all 3 of us don`t have to do it. Then Monday is completely free - our flight is at 11 so we have the whole day free. I think this is much better itinerary but am open to additional improvements!
On a separate note, while on Maui we are going to go to Haleaka. We don`t plan to do the bike ride down and thus I think we will just go on our own. Do you think it is worth going for sunrise or just whenever we get up? We will have some jet lag but it will still be early given the driving time!
Also does anyone have any thoughts on the Trilogy snorkel trip to Lanai? I have heard great things about it but pretty expensive!! And would a snorkel trip to Molokini then be redundant?
