What is the history and culture of Chikmagalur?

History of this small town of Chikmaglur is as interesting as the city itself. It is believed that this city was presented as dowry to younger daughter of historical figure Rukmangada, the chief of Sakrepatna. The name Chikamaglur in itself means younger daughters town. And interestingly just 5 kms away from Chikmagalur is Hiremagaluru which means "The town of the elder daughter".
Hoyasala dynasty ruled this city in medieval times and gifted this city with beautiful monuments of Hoysala style. Amriteshwara temple at Amrithapura in Tarikere Taluk is one great example of this style. It is a must visit place in this city. Followed by Hoysalas the city was also rule by Hyder Ali and his legendry son Tipu Sultan for a long time.
This is the city where coffee was first introduced in our Country. It is said that wandering mystic by name Baba Budan brought 7 coffee seeds from the Holy city of Mecca and planted them in this place, now known as Baba Budan Hill Range. Since then this city has become popular for its coffee.
This city has also been known by various names, till 1947 it was called Kadur. Later on it was rechristened as Chikmagulur.. This city also attracted lots of global attention in the year 1978 when the former Indian Prime Minister, Indira Gandhi stood for elections here and got elected to Lok Sabha, the Indian Parliament.
