Katra is a small town located at the foothills of the Trikuta Mountains and it is the base camp for people going for the Vaishno Devi Yatra. The Vaishno Devi shrine is located at a distance of about 13 kms from here.
If you want to know why this temple is considered so sacred and why lakhs of people visit here each year then you must know the story. Around 700 years back Vaishno devi who devoted herself to Lord Vishnu came here to practice celibacy. She set up the ashram at the base of the Trikuta Mountain and it was here that she prayed and worshipped Lord Vishnu. Bhairon Nath was a demon God and he had an evil eye on her. When Vaishno Devi found this out she ran towards the Himalayas for protection and continue her spiritual journey. She found a cave at Ardh Kuwari which today is called Garbh Joon and the demon could not find her.
When the demon finally found her after nine months he met his own death as she turned into Goddess Kali and beheaded him with her trident or trishul when he made attempts to harass her. This was the time when the demon felt guilty and asked for forgiveness. The Goddess there after made Trikuta Mountains her permanent home and this is where the temple came up with time and till date people visit it in large numbers.
Katra is located close to Mata Vaishno Devi and it is a well-known place for pilgrimage. Lakhs of devotees make their way to this holy place each year and atone for their sins. One can experience the divine environment that exists here and it takes you on a trip devoid of pleasure but one where you would surely feel an enlightened person.
