The city was located by Sir Elphinstone in the year 1871 and was earlier referred to as Aolonali which actually means an area surrounded by caves. The area which has a dense forest cover all around was once ruled by the Yadava dynasty. The Mughals and Peshwas built plenty of forts here and during their time a lot of construction work took place here till the area was taken over in 1818 by the British regime. The British immediately took to the lush green forest cover and natural beauty of the place.
