What is the history and culture of Pune?

The present city of Pune is definitely an amalgam of modernity and old traditions. On one hand it has young throbbing hearts present in multitude of academic institutions on other it is place of deep cultural heritage. It is called cultural capital of Maharashtra and is bound to mesmerize you with its various facets.
Pune has its own interesting historical background.It is believed Pune is derived from the word PunyaNagri(meaning city of Virtue) . The first ref. of this city can be found in copper plates of 758 AD and of 768 AD, which reveal that the Rashtrakootas, ruled it. This is also the time when the famous Pataleshwar Temple was built.
Maratha and Peshwa rulers can be considered the most important dynasties of Pune. Their period lasted from around 1626 uptill 1817 before the onset of British Empire. This city was also briefly ruled by Mughals from 1660-1670, but was later recaptured by Marathas in 1670.The most important and valiant ruler of this period definitely is Chattrapati Shivaji(1645 to 1680). Chattrapati Shivaji’s heroism has been part of many tales and stories in Maharashtra.
From the time of Independence of India in 1947 , this city has been growing in almost all aspects, education, industries etc. This city is bound to charm you with its modern outlook and old traditional charm. It is modern but still not mad metropolis like some of the big cities. People are warm hearted and visitors like you are forever welcome.
