What is the history and culture of Srinagar?

Srinagar, the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir, called Paradise on earth. As said in the words of poet Firdaus "Agar firdaus bar roo-e zameen ast, Hameen ast-o hameen ast-o hameen ast" Meaning if there is paradise on earth it is here it is here. So welcome to the paradise.
This beautiful city of Srinagar is on the banks of river Jhelum and is surrounded by mountains from all side. It is believed that it came into existence around 3rd century BC.T he city derives its name from Sanskrit-Where Sri means Goddess of Wealth Laxmi and Nagar means City.
This city is said to be as founded by King Praversena II who named it Praversenpur about 2000 years ago. Buddhism was introduced in this city by king Ashoka and later strengthened by Kushana rulers in 1st Century BC. An insight into ancient history of Kashmir can be attained by going through the great epic- Rajtaringini- written around 12 Century CE by great scholar “Kalhana”
From 14th to 19th century the city was largely ruled by Muslim rulers, until it was annexed by Maharaja Ranjit Singh of Punjab. The treaty inter alia provided British de facto suzerainty over the Kashmir Valley.
Though in recent past, the city has seen a lot of unrest. But it still maintains it serenity and beauty. The city has a rich cultural past of spiritual leaders from different communities. Lalleshwari, Rishi pir, Nund rishi, Bhagwan Gopinath..etc. Who have guided the lives of Kashmiri inhabitants from past. This beautiful city is home to many religious places like Shankracharya, Holy Hazratbal, ChattiPadshahi Gurudwara. All the festivals like Shivratri, Eid, Christmas etc are celebrated with great harmony.
So come an experience this paradise of east and breathe into the essence of Kashmir- which is called Kashmiriyat.
