Tripura was initially not a part of India and became a part after 1949. Before 1949 Tripura was ruled by a Hindu royal family, the Manikyas, which belonged to Tripura, for a couple of centuries. They even ruled the princely city of Udaipur and then later on Old Agartala or Kayerpur, and finally Agartala.
In the 1880’s the ruler of Tripura was a major contributor during the Bengali renaissance and the same was well depicted by the well known poet-philosopher Rabindranath Tagore. During the Indian partition Tripura had many people from Bengal coming as refugees and leaving the local Borok-Tripuri, and these people were a minority in their own state. This resulted in a lot of tension and saw dozens of armed groups who were fighting for as well as against the creation of an independent state.
