Many people would not be aware that the Acharya Jagadish Chandra Bose Indian Botanic Garden was earlier known as the Indian Botanical garden. These gardens are located in Shibpur in Howrah, near the city of Kolkata. These were also known as the Calcutta Botanical Garden, and previously as the Royal Botanic Garden, Calcutta. These gardens have a huge variety of some very some rare species of plants of over 12,000 specimens which are spread over 109 hectares. The botanical garden is being managed and controlled by the Botanical Survey of India which is under the control of the Ministry of Environment and Forests, Government of India.
If you would like to see the largest Banyan Tree in the world, the Indian botanical garden is the place to be visited. The tree is almost 250 year old tree looks like a tiny forest in itself and attracts thousands of people every year and is tree is more than 330 metres in circumference. One can also see animals inside the Botanic Garden include the Jackal (Canis aureus) and the Indian Fox. People also get together for family picnics in the Botanical garden.
