The Jaintia Hills are located in Nartiang, which is at an attitude of 6000 sq feet above sea level. The hills are located in a beautiful countryside and amongst the forest of monoliths. The hills were dedicated to to honor the Jaintia kings.
Located at a close distance of 1km, is the well known Durga temple, which was at one point in time the place meant for human sacrifices. You could also visit Nartiang which is only a day trip, which is at a distance of only 54 kms from Shillong. The district center of Jaintia Hills is Jowai. The market in Jowai is totally vibrant and full of kwai-chewing, which are the traditionally dressed local women.
The town is very lively and full of life during the Behdienkhlam festival, held in July, when towers of cloth and wood are erected to the accompaniment of music, dancing and archery competitions.
You could visit Jowai in a shared taxi, which will cost you not more than Rs 10 and then journey lasts only 35 minutes. You could also travel in the Silchar-Shillong bus, which leaves at 7am and see Nartiang and continue your journey to Shillong the same evening.
Sumos are also available from Jowai–Shillong, and these would cost you Rs 50, and take 1½ hours, but they leave only when all the seats are fully occupied.
