The Jhansi Fort, which caused the city to get its name, was constructed under the aegis of Raja Bir Singh Deo, the Orchha King in 1613. Originally having ten gates, some of which are still intact, the fort also houses the huge cannons named Bhawani Shankar and Karak Bijli which were used by Rani Laxmi Bai in her fight for independence. The areas around the fort derive their names from the old gates of the fort. Thus you will still find places known as Datia Darwaja and Jharna gate in Jhansi. In accordance with Hindu religion, there are temples inside the fort dedicated to Lord Shiva and Lord Ganesha.
