Kachchh is one of the main attractions in the state of Gujarat. The name comes from Kachbo which means tortoise in Gujarat. This region is tortoise shaped and is surrounded by Gulf of Kachchh and Little Ranns. During the dry season, the Ranns are special places of interest as they look like white desert. The white color is due to the salt that gets accumulated in the coast. In the rainy seasons, they are flooded with water and become muddy. The scattered islands above the salt level grow some grass and therefore wildlife exists there.
Kachchh is very popular for its traditional folk culture. The art work created by the jigsaw of tribal groups is world famous. The handicrafts work that they do is the USP of the Kachchh markets. Kachchh has experienced two big earthquakes in its history which entirely changed its geography and demography subsequently. The first one that came in 1819, altered the path of Indus river that earlier flowed throw it. In 2001, there was an earthquake which killed around 30,000 people. The place took some time to recover from the shock. Today it’s attracting tourists from all over the world. Gujarat Tourism especially focuses on the Kachchh region while promoting the state.
