Lord Kamtanath is revered as the patron deity of Chitrakoot. The lord who fulfills all wishes, Lord Kamta Nath is worshipped at the Kamtanath Mandir located on the top of Kamadgiri Mountain. Devotees believe that a barefoot circumambulation of the Kamadgiri Mountains will fulfill all your wishes.
According to the epic Ramayana, asuras (demons) residing in the Dandaka forest nearby would cause destruction and create havoc for the people living in that area. The frightened and harassed villagers approached Lord Rama at Chitrakoot and pleaded with him to get rid of these demons. Lord Rama agreed and prayed to Lord Kamtanath to give him strength in order to vanquish these asuras. His wish was granted and Lord Rama succeeded in killing the demons and bringing peace to the region.
Another legend claims that Lord Kamtanath is in fact a incarnation of Lord Rama himself. Irrespective of the legend that you believe in, the common factor in both is that a visit to the temple of Lord Kamtanath followed by the circumambulation of the Kamadgiri Mountain will fulfill your wishes. The temple contains the idol of Lord Kamtanath, made of black stone and that of his consort, the Goddess Kamadgiri. Frequented by devotees, the temple and its surrounding areas is a very vibrant place. The five and a half kilometer circumambulation of the Kamadgiri Mountain can be an invigorating experience as well as a spiritual one.
