Keylong is known as the district headquarters of Lahaul-Spiti and is located at an altitude of 3340 metres above sea level. Keylong has been referred to as oasis of green fields, willow planted water courses, brown hills and many snowy peaks. In the earlier days Keylong was known to be the home of the Moravian missionaries. There were many well known monasteries like the Tayul, Khardong, and Shashur which are all located within a few kilometers radius. 'Keylong Wazir' is the local deity and there is a temple dedicated Keylong Wazir' and that is known as the house of Shri Nawang Dorji.
