Kolar Gold Fields, a small mining town located in Bangarpet Taluka, lies in the district of the Kolar in Karnataka. Including a township with an abbreviated form of its name (KGF), the area is populated by the families belonging to the employees of BEML and BGML. About 100 kilometers from Bengaluru and only 30 kilometers from Kolar , KGF lies on the ridge of hills-- with Dod Betta hill rising to a height of 3195 feet above sea level towards its east. This town was reputed for gold mining for over hundred years and then closed its operations in 2001, due to very low levels of gold production. Now, only 3 million tonnes of gold remain underground.
