Lachen is a traditional village which is changing with times as more and more tourists are visiting here. The traditional houses are made of wood on the stone bases and are decorated by Tibetan style window frames. The newer houses that are being made are of concrete and do not have that charm that the older ones have. Nevertheless, the valley appears colorful and combined with the beautifully preserved culture, it makes it even better. You will find the wood logs stacked at every place, to ensure the fuel for the winters. There is Lachen Gompa in the village which is around 15 kms from the main area and remains open in the early mornings or later afternoons. If you are entering the town, you will find a huge prayer wheel along with a weird collection of the geometric threads which are there to trap the evil spirits. That tells you about the religious belief of the people.
Lachen is the point where the eight day long trekking expedition to Green Lake along the Zemu Glacier begins. There are expensive permits associated with these treks. Also, the careful planning is required or otherwise it could be risky. There are many hotels including the budget and the luxurious ones where one can stay in Lachen. Many new hotels are being set up too. It is a beautiful place and should not be missed while visiting the state of Sikkim.
