The Lamayuru Monastery is located at a distance of approximately 127 km west of Leh. This is considered to be one of the oldest monasteries based in Ladakh. The monastery is also referred to as “Yung-drung, and is a must visit, while visiting Leh and Ladakh.
The Lamayuru Monastery was initially founded by Mahasiddhacharya Naropa. The history of the monastery goes back to the 11th century and this originally belonged to Red-Hat sect of Buddhism. There are more than 150 monks currently residing in this monastery. The monastery even houses a very rich collection of artifacts. Some of these artifacts include a few thankas, wall paintings, carpets and, statues. There are two annual Mask Dance festivals held in this monastery.
