Also known as the Chitrangini Temple, the Lotus Mahal is located in the Zenana (Ladies) enclosure, Hampi and is a unique blend of Hindu-Islamic architectural styles. Although the base of the structure carries the unmistakable style of the Vijayanagara architecture, the towers are very typical of the style seen in the Islamic school. The Lotus Mahal is enclosed within high walls with watch towers at each corner.
No longer in its glory, it never the less still retains the intricate carvings on its walls and arches. Geometrical patterns, birds, animals and such adorn the walls of the palace while the arches have carvings of Makara Torana, a mythical sea creature that was supposed to be Goddess Ganga’s steed. A two storied structure; it has huge pillars and arches supporting the roof. Traces of pipelines can still be seen in the space between the sides of the roof and the arches. It is believed that water was sent through these pipes to keep the palace cool during the hot summer months. This beautiful sightseeing location ranks high on the list of tourists and tour operators alike.
