One of the oldest temples located in Mumbai is the Mahalaxmi temple which was built by Dhakji Dadaji in the year 1831. It lies in Breach Candy along the seashore touching the Malabar Hills. Every month huge crowds visit this temple which was built dedicated to Mahalakshmi who is the Goddess of wealth according to religious Hindu texts and scriptures. The temple is quite beautiful and has intricate carvings all over it. The doorway that leads to the temple complex is adorned with ornaments and it only makes the place look more beautiful.
There is a huge idol of the goddess that is decorated with gold ornaments and flowers and there are also idols of other Hindu goddesses such as Saraswati and Mahakali. During the Navratri season the temple is decorated beautifully and the celebrations here are not to be missed. The temple is open from 6 am to 10 pm every day and one can only view the faces of the idols around 9:30 pm as they are covered by golden masks throughout the day.
