The beautiful town of Maheshwar has a lot of significance. It has been mentioned in both Ramayana and Mahabharata under its old name Mahishmati. The town is situated on the banks of Narmada river and attracts a large number of pilgrims from all over the country. There are various Ghats for the pilgrims where they take bath and purify themselves. Under the rule of Holkar queen Ahilyabai in 18th century, the town witnessed a wonderful time. She also built the palace and many other monuments here. The houses of Maheshwar are of different types and tell the story of old architecture in the Hindu culture. The fort is not very far from the main bus station and can even be reached by walk. There are a number of Ghats nearby and the tourists can go to any of them. This is a different town and one must visit her to have a different kind of experience.
