Tea bushes that spread over 500 acres and dense woodlands of over 1100 acres make up the Makaibari Tea Estate. Amongst one of the most well known of the Darjeeling tea gardens, Makaibari holds the distinction of being under the ownership of the family that started it way back in 1859. Mr. Rajah Banerjee, the great grandson of the founder, welcomes visitors to his estate and takes pleasure in showing them around. A tour of the garden can be booked by calling him in advance.
Lately, they have added home-stays with the workers and their families and a night spent there can be a rewarding experience. During the plucking season, you can join the workers to pluck the well known ‘two leaves and a bud’ that go into the making of fine Darjeeling Tea. Hiking in the garden is another way to experience the terrains of Makaibari.
