Marundeeswarar Temple is more commonly also known as the God of Medicines. This temple is located in Tiruvanmiyur, Chennai and the Hindu God Shiva is the main deity of the temple. People see Lord Shiva in the form of Marundeeswar or Aushadeeswarar.
As per the Hindu Mythology it is believed that the great saint Agastya, named Lord Shiva as "Aushadeeswarar". It is believed that the Sun and the Moon, offer prayers here in the temple, every evening. Quite unlike the other Hindu temples, there is no Shrine to be worshipped here. There is no statute or shrine for the Navagrahas too because it is believed that the Sun and Moon are in prayer mode here. The main statute or "lingam" is referred to as Swayambu. Lord Shiva is also known as Palvannanathan" because the divine cow, Kamadhenu, used to shower him with milk continuously.
The place comes to life during the festival period. People from all over the world especially come to attend this festival. During the festival period, a procession is usually carried out in which the deity is taken on procession in the middle of the day. There is a high chariot in which the deity, priests and about 6 or 7 people are there and they take the deity all around the temple.
A lot of people visit the temple and take the blessings of the Lord Shiva. People believe that whosoever visits this temple sincerely and consumes a mixture of sacred ash, milk and water offered at the temple can get cured from any ailment.
