Matheran is a well known Jungle which is located in the Sahyadri Mountains in the middle of shaded forests and zig zag walking tracks and breathtaking lookouts. This is one of the prettiest hill station of the Indian state of Maharashtras hill stations. The place was discovered by Hugh Malet, in 1850 while he was climbing the path known as Shivaji’s Ladder.
The place is very peaceful as motor vehicle and bicycles are completely banned and thus it makes an ideal place to rest. The place is generally visited by Indian and not many foreigners visit the place.
The best time to visit the place is from mid-June to early October. Although a large number of people also visit this place during the Diwali and Christmas season too. The monsoons are quite terrible and the village hibernates during the monsoon and gets quite muddy too.
For reaching Matheran you need to take the toy train from the Neral Junction which goes past the beautiful and scenic route of 21kms right through the heart of the village.
