Imagine walking into a village and finding yourself amidst a local populace that converses in Sanskrit. Mattur or Mathur along with Hosahalli are the two villages where you will come face to face with this amazing fact. The mother of all Indian languages, Sanskrit is spoken by the locals, with over ninety percent of them well versed in the language and using it for their regular conversations.
Mattur and Hosahalli are also famous for their art of storytelling in Karnataka. The stories are woven into songs with the music composition based on classical Carnatic music ragas or Kannada folk tunes. Gamaka as this art of singing stories is called is followed by the interpretation and explanation of the story. This is called the Vyakhana. An art that is part of their heritage, the people of these villages make sure that the art is passed from one generation to the next.
