Protected and preserved by the villagers, the Mawphlang Sacred Forest- Meghalaya, is indeed sacred to the people who look after it. In a state that protects and preserves its forests and where people believe that the association of humans and ecology is divine and pure, it is no wonder that maintaining the natural reserves and resources of the local forests is a part of the daily lives of the people.
Stone megaliths mark the boundary of the Mawphlang Sacred Forest, which besides trees and orchids, is also home to a large number of medicinal plants and herbs. The place is a botanists delight and you will see a good number of them from all around the world –walking along the forests lesser trodden paths and tracks. The Mawphlang Sacred Forest is a study in how mankind and the environment can co-exist without damaging and depleting each other. Although you are not allowed to remove plants from this area, it is still an educating trip to be able to observe the large number of species that make this forest.
