Meghalaya is a small state located in the Eastern region of India. This state was initially a part of Assam and was declared as a separate state in the year 1972. This is also referred to as the “Abode of Clouds”. Meghalaya is known as a very cool and a refreshing place, when compared to the state of Assam which is quite sweaty. The state of Meghalaya is located on the cliffs which are quite rocky and these are located above the plains of Bengal plains.
The cities of Cherrapunjee and Mawsynram are considered to be the wettest places on earth. Here you will also get to see Asia’s longest caves and waterfalls. The eastern and the central Meghalaya region are quite densely populated by the tribes of Jaintia, Pnar and Khasi people, these were the people whom actually from Southeast Asia. In the Western Meghalaya area you will see the unrelated Garo tribe, which inhabit this region.
These tribes despite coming from different backgrounds are quite similar as they use a common matrilineal system of inheritance, which means that the children take the mothers family name and you will see that babies are carried by their father on their back.
