Situated 114 km north ofKolkata,Nabadwip is a renowned Krishna pilgrimage centre. Mobs of devotees visit Nabadwip to pay their homage to Lord Krishan at this ancient centre of Sanskrit culture. LakshmanSen, the last Hindu king of Bengal, had transferred his capital to Nabadwip from Gaur. Mayapur, which is situated across the river from Nabadwip, is a centre for the ISKCON (Hare Krishna) movement. A large colourful temple and the clean ISKCON guest houses with basic facilities stand in Mayapur. Courtesy ISKCON, a private bus runs to Kolkata on Friday, Saturday and Sunday early mornings.
